Description
These exotic flowers are the emerging flowers of the 'Ohi'a Lehua 'Ula a Pele or red lehua flowers. These are flowers of the 'Ohi'a tree, a cherished Hawaiian native tree. The brilliant red sprays represent the volcano goddess Pele. On Hawai'i Island large areas are forested by 'Ohi'a trees. The flowers are essential for native Hawaiian birds that drink nectar from the flowers. During the spring when the trees bloom, in deep forest areas where imported birds still have not penetrated, the song of native birds is distinct and very different from sparrow, Japanese White Eye or others brought to the Island. I always feel I stepped back in time to be surrounded by their songs.
