Description
This beautiful flower is from the native Hawaiian Ohia tree. The flowers can be red, yellow or orange. Rare birds feed off the nectar. The lehua has been used for years in leis, but recently a virus causing the death of these iconic Hawaiian trees had lead to a ban on using the flowers, to try and prevent the spread of the disease.

Oh, Heidi -- such a beautiful capture of this lovely blossom. I used to love seeing them in the haku leis. I hope they get the disease under control. I can't imagine Hawaii without them. Great capture. Featured in Hawaiiana. Aloha nui!
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Mahalo to you Jane. It is very sad how much of the ohia has been infected, but there is also quite a lot of forest more toward Hilo that has shown no signs of the disease. A hopeful thing.
