Description
This stunning white hibiscus is the native Hawaiian Kokio hibiscus (hibiscus arnottianus). Also known as the Koki'o ke'oke'o. This beautiful flower is endangered in the wild, but can be cultivated, as is the case of this flower in a friend's garden.
Hibiscus arnottianus is a Hawaiian endemic plant with one endangered subspecies. It is native to the moist to wet forests of the mountains of Moloka'i and O'ahu. Subspecies arnottianus grows at elevations of 390 to 2500 feet in the Wai'anae and eastern Ko'olau mountains of O'ahu. Subspecies immaculatus is extremely rare and grows in a few valleys on Moloka'i. Subspecies punaluuensis grows in the Ko'olau Mountains at elevations of 650 to 2200 feet.

Absolutely lovely. How wonderful to be able to see one of these rare flowers. (Is there a variety of this that grows on Maui up Iao Valley? I've seen something similar to this hiking a trail above the visitor center there many years ago, but not sure if it's the same.) Featured in Hawaiiana. Aloha nui!

Mahalo nui loa to you Jane for this feature. I have not been to that trail for 5 years and two years ago the entire area suffered severe flooding, so not sure if these beautiful flowers remain there.
