Description
The lovely Ohia tree, native to Hawai'i bloom brilliant red, firecracker flowers called Lehua at the summit of Kilauea, the active volcano on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Pele is the Hawaiian Goddess of our volcanoes and this tree is a representative of Pele's red, fiery beauty. In this photo you can see the crater of Halemaumau in the distance, Pele's home on our Island and situated inside Volcano National Park. Moments after this photo was taken, as huge cloud of ash began to rise from the crater floor. This is part of the now, two week old eruption chain of events that is occuring on the Big Island, starting at the end of April 2008.

We have been down in the Kilauea Caldera when it was not so active. Great composition of this photo! L/F, ~Jeff at JSJ Photography

Thank you Jeff. It is very strange to know that there is no lava lake in the crater right now. Has been such a part of our lives for 10 years.
