Description
When the flowers of the native 'ohi'a lehua mamo bloom, they seem to be emerging creatures, testing the air. Yellow in the Hawaiian language is 'mamo'. The yellow version of this iconic Hawaiian tree is uncommon. The most common color of flowers is red. In Hawaiian culture, the 'Ohi'a tree s a manifestation of the volcano goddess Pele, as the flowers appear like fountains of lava. 'Ohi'a Lehua blooms in the spring.
I am fortunate to have a 'Ohi'a Lehua Mamo tree growing in my yard and look foward every spring to the fountains of yellow flowers that burst from the tree.
