Description
Hawai'i has a native poppy, the Pua Kala (pua means flower and kala means money). The scientific name is argemone glauca. The Hawaiian name must be recent, as ancient Hawaiians did not use money and would not have associated this flower with money until white people came and recognized it as a plant that was grown in many Asian countries for financial purposes. Ancient Hawaiian did know about medicinal uses for this plant, however. In this photo, late afternoon light shines through the flower and highlight the spines along the plant.
