Description
While photographing tiny white flowers in a field, this tiny gift alighted on one of the flowers. The is the Hawaiian Blue butterfly. This butterfly is smaller than a dime. The butterfly is also known as the Koa Butterfly or Blackburn's Butterfly. The scientific name given to it is Udara blackburnii. The inside of the wings of this little beauty are a soft, pale blue. It is one of only two edemic butterflies in Hawai'i. Whenever I encounter any native specie or endemic specie, I think of the incredible journey that those creatures made to the Hawaiian Islands. In the case of insects, they would have had to float here on wood flotsam in the form of larvae or eggs in a journey of at least 1900 miles. Amazingly the closest landfall from Hawai'i is the tip of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The Udara family of butterflies is most common in the Himalayas, which is an incredibly far journey from Hawai'i.
