Description
These are flowers of the Hawaiian 'Ohai, a very rare and endangered species belonging to the pea family (Sesbania tomentosa). This plant grows in two forms, a prostrate form that grows in vine form on the ground and an up-right shrub or small tree. Both forms prefer dry, sunny, well-drained soils and withstand high winds and salt spray along coastal areas. Once found on all the Islands in Hawai'i where the environmental conditions were correct, this plant is now very rare and is only found in remote locations away from imported grazing animals and people and development. The flowers were once used for leis.
