Heidi, I have a lot of very wonderful memories of weekends spent on the Big Island when I lived on Maui (and Aloha and Hawaiian Air had those wonderful coupon books for cheap flights! LOL) I've spent quite a bit of time hiking around Volcano National Park, Thurston Lava Tube, Trail of Destruction and so many more wonderful areas. It is so sad to think that those wonderful and beautiful areas could be lost or changed dramatically forever, along with the kahili ginger, ohia and other utterly beautiful trees and flowers that grow there. This photo represents a beautiful memory of that very special and spiritual place. Featured in Hawaiiana. L/F

Heidi Fickinger replied:

Aloha nui Jane. I can completely identify with your sentiments, Jane. The Park and Halemaumau are changed forever. The newest news is that they are going to open the Park sometime soon, but people will have to book a reservation to go and only completely escorted groups of no more than 30 will be allowed in and only and in certain areas. I cannot even fathom that!
