Description
On May 18th the lava from the May 2018 eruption of Kilauea Volcano in the East Rift Zone reached the ocean. The flow was made of thick, tumbling 'a'a lava. This type of lava travels slowly; a slow moving, bulldozer-like type of lava that has the appearance of black cookie dough with bright red, hot spots. The surface cools and is rough black, but at its center, molten hot rock still moves foward with relentless force. As it reaches the ocean, thick clouds of steam and gases continuously roil from the water's surface to form shape-shifting clouds that run before the wind and wind in wisps that coil around the steaming lava. If you look closely, at the top of the image, you can see shimmering heat coming off the still molten hot lava (which is approximately 1400 degree farenheit). It is a riveting, spectacular sight to witness.

Your capture of this scene is absolutely amazing, Heidi... though at the same time terrifying, I am sure. f/l
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Thank you Ann. It would be terrifying to be in the path of this relentess lava flow.
