Description
As fissure Number 8 continues to erupt in the Puna District on the Island of Hawai'i, it lights up the night every night with a fountain of lava that varies from 140-300 feet plus into the sky. The area is completey restricted due to obvious hazards of spattering lava and toxic gases. While visiting friends near the area, we stopped to observe the incredible glow that lit the cloud of gases and steam venting from this fissure. Gases and heat in the area have stripped some trees of their leaves. Interestingly, the trees and plants mostly affected are those that have been introduced and have spread invasively for decades. Native trees, vines and other plants show little sign of distress from the surrounding lava flow (unless, of course, the lava flows directly in their path and burns them to the ground). The newly forming pu'u (volcanic cone) was probably a mile away, but still lit the sky in fiery red glory.
