Description
This is the beautiful lighthouse is the Kīlauea Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was commissioned to be built in 1913 on May 1st and was named the Kīlauea Point Light Station. 100 years to the day it was renamed the Daniel K. Inouye Kīlauea Point Lighthouse on May 1, 2013. This honor was bestowed as U.S. Senator Inouye was instrumental in securing funds to restore the lighthouse itself. The light however, is not operational. The 8,000 pound lens structure was originally designed to float on 260 pounds of mercury, allowing the lens to rotate with a simple weight-driven clock. Due to the now-known dangers of mercury, this mechanism could not be restored. The lamp itself is lit for ceremonial occasions, but the lens does not rotate.
The lighthouse resides in the Kīlauea National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is home and nesting site to many rare and endangered plants and birds, including native species such as the endangered nēnē (Hawaiian goose), the mōlī (Laysan albatross), and has become an appropriate translocation site for the endangered ‘ua‘u (Hawaiian petrel) and threatened ‘a‘o (Newell's shearwater).
