Description
In April of 2018 Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island in Hawai'i began a sequence of events that has lead to a significant volcanic eruption. The lava lakes of both the Pu'u O'o and Halemaumau craters rose dramatically at the end of April. In early May, after a 6.9 earthquake that rocked the East Side of the Island, both lakes suddenly drained below the water table. This lead to the opening of fissures more than 20 miles away and fountains of lava and volcanic gases began to stream out of fissures, threatening and subsequently sending houses up in flames. Cracks appeared across roads in a line downstream of the craters and fissure after fissure began to open and erupt. Meanwhile, at the Halemaumau Crater at the summit of Kilauea, rocks began to fall from the crater walls, broken free from the close to 1000 quakes from 1.0 to over 4.0. While at the summit in the Hawaiian Volcano National Park, I witnessed this giant writhing cloud of ash and steam burst from the bowel of the crater to rise high above the rim, roiling and coiling across the sky and thence to slowly dissipate in the strong trade winds blowing from the north. It was an incredible sight to witness.
