Description
Three days before the current May eruption started from the Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island in Hawai'i, I was at the summit, overlooking Halemaumau Crater. Halemaumau is within the Hawaiian Volcano National Park. I was there to witness and photograph the lava lake that had risen to overflow the inner walls of the crater. This is the second time I have seen the lake overflow the inner crater walls, the first being in 2015. This lake appeared on September 5th of 2008, after a series of explosions beginning in March of that year. Since 2008, the lake has given a beautiful orange-red glow to the sky over the crater at night, accompanied by a plume of volcanic gases rising to the sky.
