Description
This gorgeous fern is the Hawaiian native 'Ama'u fern or Amanmau fern (Sadleria cyatheoides). Many tropical plants on the Island can be seen to have yellow to red coloration on new growth, as with this fern. The coloration is actually produced by the plant as a sunblock to protect the new growth from sunburn. This coloration and the beautiful, intricate design formed by the individual fronds makes this fern truly lovely.
The 'Amau'u is endemic to Hawaii and inhabits lava flows, open areas, and wet forests on all major islands up to an altitude of 1,676 m (5,499 ft). This fern is one of the first species to grow on barren lava fields. It is an amazing sight to see them beginning to grow out of cracks in reatively newly hardened lava, with no soil and extreme temperatures from sun on the black lava. Ferns are symbols in many cultures of new life and resilence and this beautiful fern exemplifies this.
