Description
The 2018 eruption of the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai'i began at the end of April with a large 6.9 earthquake that drained the two active craters, Halemaumau and Pu'u O'o of their lava lakes. On the surface of the earth, the eruptions sent out lightning bolts of cracks more than 20 miles away from the pressure of the moving lava under the surface of the earth. Within days fissures that had opened began oozing 'a'a flows of lava. 'A'a is a slow-moving type of lava that moves in tumbling, rolls of molten lava. As the eruption grew, fountains of a more fluid type of lava, pahohoe, began emerging from the fissures in huge fountains that formed rivers of lava. Within 2 days, the pahohoe flows traveled downslope from the fissures and began pouring into the sea. This ocean entry of pahoehoe lava occurred a day after the slower moving 'a'a had reached the sea about 500 yards further to the south. When lava meets the ocean, the ocean boils, sending huge clouds of steam sailing into the sky.
This image was taken at dawn, off-shore of the Puna district, where lava had reached the sea.

Awesome beauty in some ways...dramatic indeed. I lived close to the lava flow from 2010 to 2013 and witnessed this. Take care - it is dangerous! L/F
