Description
The Islands of Hawai'i have been made over millions of years by eruptions of molten lava from the sea floor. The youngest of the Hawaiian Islands is the Big Island, which is the farthest south of the Hawaiian Island Chain. It is home to 4 active volcanoes and one extinct one. Three of the volcanoes have erupted in the last 200 hundred years and one, the one that is sending lava into the sea in this image, Kilaeau, has been continuously erupting since 1983. To witness the drama and extraordinary beauty of a volcanic eruption is life-changing on some levels.

Another beautiful work. Heidi, I lived in the islands for 10 years. And I love your work. In 83 I flew over Kilaeau erupting at 700 feet. I could feel the heat through the floor of the plane......Nice work here.
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Many thanks Jeff. You must have seen some amazing things in 1983. I was not living here at that time.

That's one very angry landscape! The steam here is dramatic in its detail.
Heidi Fickinger replied:
It is a surreal, dramatic event to witness. Joseph. When the lava hits the sea, billowing clouds of steam and gases form another type of eruption.
