Description
The Hōkūleʻa is a handmade Hawaiian traditional sailing canoe that completed an epic round-the-world sailing voyage. The journey took 3 years, visiting 26 countries and covering over 47,000 miles. The purpose of the journey was both to promote Hawaiian and Polynesian culture, connections to all peoples and cultures and a return to sustainability. When Hōkūleʻa finished her journey and returned to Hawai'i, she sailed to each of the Islands to thank all the people who supported her and her crew. This is from her visit to the Big Island and to Hilo. The sister ship of Hōkūleʻa, Hikianalia is currently (November 2018) making a journey to sail the western coast of the U.S. Mainland. Its journey can be followed on the Polynesian Voyaging Society at http://www.hokulea.com/ You can also become a member of the society and help support the society's efforts to connect people on all continents.
