Description
The brilliant red eyes and long wisp of a white feather emerging from the black crown of this water bird makes for easy identification. This heron stood motionless for quite a long time before taking flight. In Hawai'i, these birds are known as the 'Auku'u and are gregarious and unlike mainland U.S. birds, those in Hawai'i are diurnal (they hunt both during the day and at night). The species uses a variety of shallow wetlands for foraging and employs various techniques to capture a diversity of prey including insects, fish, frogs, mice, and the young of other native waterbirds.
