Description
The diversity of the environments on Hawai'i Island is amazing. We have tropical forests, lava fields, sometimes snow-capped mountains and wild grasslands. This is a view from the slopes of the now extinct Kohala volcano on the northwestern side of the Island. Kohala is the oldest of the 5 volcanoes that have formed Hawai'i Island. Kohala volcano is estimated to be a just over a million years old. The lava rocks from this volcano actually have a magnetic record of the last known reversal of the magnetic field on earth 780,000 years ago which was captured when the lava flowed from the volcano.
