Description
On Hawai'i Island the nearly continuous eruption of the Kīlauea volcano emits continuous gases of sulfur dioxide and nitric oxides, which produce 'volcano vog' when those gases react with the high level of moisture in the air. While vog creates a haze and can cause breathing problems for those who suffer from asthma and other lung conditions, it makes for incredibly beautiful and unexpected sunrises, such as this one where the light from the sun, still below the ocean horizon, is thrust into the sky between marine layer clouds into the vog-hazed sky in ethereal pink and blue sun rays.
