Mount Yasur on the Tanna Island in Vanuatu is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Yasur is known for its spectacular persistent strombolian activity that consists of regular small to violent explosions from one or several vents. Yasur has been erupting nearly continuously since at least 1774 and is very likey to have been erupting much longer. This date is when Captain Cook saw the volcano erupting and was the first Westerner to document the volcano. The amount of lava that has come from the volcano in the past century has raised the level of Port Resolution Harbor more than 65 feet.
Yasur is sacred to the Yakel tribe, on whose land the volcano exists. Yasur is a deity to the Yakel and is male. The tribe is the only entity that can conduct tours to the summit. Prior to walking to the top to witness its constant eruptions, the Yakel conducts a ritual dance in which the tribe's chief asks Yasur if he will allow the people to go to the top on that day. If Chief feels that Yasur does not want people there, the tour does not go.
