Description
Hawai'i has a single native hawaiian hawk, the Hawaiian 'Io (buteo solitarius). Like all non-migratory birds that are native to the Islands, this species is likely to have been blown here, likely when the jetstream dips very low into the Pacific. On occasion other raptors have been sighted on the Islands. Blown from their customary migratory route between North America and South America, the first birds arrived before human voyagers discovered the Islands over a thousand years ago. Although there are occasional vagrants (osprey, sea eagles, and peregrines), the Hawaiian hawk remains the only diurnal raptor found on the islands of the Pacific. Fossil remains have shown that other raptors, including eagles and harriers were once found here, but only the Hawaiian 'Io has survived. Like most other endemic native bird species in the islands, the 'Io is threatened by loss of habitat, invasive species that bring avian diseases and other factors. These regally, beautiful birds are my favorite of native species. Every time I hear one call, or see them soaring near where I live, my spirit soars with them.

Great capture. Glad he wasn't looking your way.
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Thank you Sharon. Actually, this bird sat in the same place for hours, many times looking directly at me wondering what I was doing.
