The deep purple-blue color of these Blue Ginger flower buds seem to glow is the subdued light under the tropical forest canopy where I found them growing. Blue Ginger (Dichorisandra thyrsiflora) is from tropical Central America. This plant appears to be a ginger, but is not a ginger. It is of the spiderwort family. Like many ornamental plants brought to Hawai'i, they have naturalized in the wetland forests.
