Description
This image of Pahoehoe lava appears to be made of reptilian skin. The cracks are formed as the lava cools and water escapes in the form of stream, and the yellow coloration is from sulfur that escapes to the surface before the lava has cooled. Lava on the Big Island is often colored by minerals, such as iron (red and orange), sulfurs (yellow and white), manganese (blue), olivine (green), nickel (purple, blue & green) and others.
