Description
This full moon from August 7 of 2017. The name for a full moon in August is Sturgeon Moon. Many of the full moon names sometimes used in the United States are from Native American Indian tribes, typically those tribes who inhabited North America prior to white settlement from the Algonquins along the Eastern Seaboard to the Lake Superior. The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon. The iconic Farmer's Almanac provides names for each month's full moon. In Hawai'i this year, the moon rose on this night through light haze from volcano vog and and long, thin clouds, making me think of a marbled sky, with the marble lighting it. The light was golden shinning over the ocean.
