Description
Along the eastern edge of the Haleakalā Crater, the Mauna Hanakauhi rises 8907 feet above sea level. This mauna is part of the Kalapiwili ridge that forms the outer wall of the crater on the eastern side. Clouds cloaked the edges of the mauna, rising from the sea, slid over the edges of the pali, hiding and revealing the peak. A line of multi-colored cinder cones march across the crater floor from the steep Sliding Sands Trail that descends from the top of the western rim of the crater. The entire crater is designated as a wilderness area and is still contains many rare native Hawaiian plants such as the Maui Silversword and iconic bird species, including Nenê and Uau, the endangered Hawaiian Petrel.
