One of the incredible migratory birds that flies from the Arctic to Hawai'i (and beyond) and returns every year is the Hawaiian 'Akekeke (Ruddy Turnstone, Arrenana interpres), which is of the sandpiper family. Like other migratory birds, they fly to the Artic to breed in the spring and return to Hawai'i in late August or September to spend the winter season here. When they first arrive here in Hawai'i, their plumage is glorious gold and brown, but they soon molt to a more toned-down speckled brown, black and white. As with other Hawaiian birds, their names describe the calls they make.
To take this photo, I lay on my belly for a half hour until the birds were comfortable with me. As always when photographing wildlife of any kind, I use a long lens (600mm in this case) so that I do not make them feel uneasy about my presence.
