Description
Do you know what banana flowers look like? Now you do! Most people love to eat bananas, but have no idea what the flowers look like. The flower stalk of a mature banana tree takes awhile to grow down from the center of banana leaves that grow from the top of the tree. Looking like a purple pointed pendulum, the flower 'bud' finally begins to peel back layers and elongated, squared-off, white flowers emerge in rows all around the circumference of the bud. As they are pollinated, the flowers drop and rows of bananas start to grow. It can take months from the first emergence of the flower bulb before the bananas finally start to ripen. In Hawai'i most of our bananas that we grow are small, superbly sweet and delicious. It is best to leave the bunches on the trees as long as possible to get the most flavorful fruit. This does mean that you can compete with birds and different types of geckos for the bounty!

Indeed, now I know. I saw banana trees, but never saw banana flowers. Impressive photo, Heidi. It looks like a lady with a fancy haircut and with one of those surrealist highly ornamented hat. :)

Looks like the back of a woman head with a funky hat on!
