Description
This is a view looking down to the mouth of Waimea Canyon, on the island of Kauai in Hawai'i. Waimea Canyon is known as the 'Grand Canyon of Pacific because of the dramatic grandeur of sheer canyon walls and the depth of the Canyon. The Waimea Canyon is about ten miles long and up to 3,600 feet deep.
Formed by erosion from the Waimea River, the canyon displays the characteristic red dirt and lava that Kauai is known for, which is stunning against the deep greens of the forest at its rim and which carpet the bottom of its many side canyons. There are often rainbows arched across the canyon and during rainfalls, silvery threads of waterfalls grace its walls.
