After night fell on the first day of the September 2021 eruption of the Kīlauea volcano the incredible beauty of the volcanic plume became visible. The weather was intermittently drizzling rain and with misty clouds, which reflected the brilliant red light cast by the lava that had begun to emerge from the Halemaumau crater floor.

As a fine-art photographer of many years (initially in black and white large format film), my purpose is to capture and share the incredible beauty in our world. I have a passion for travel and photographing the many places I have been fortunate to explore. I am enthralled by both the grand scene of a live volcano or brilliant sunrise and the amazing detail and design of each tiny part of a flower. There is beauty and design in everything around us and the goal of my work is to share that and encourage everyone to look closely and take the time to see what is before us all.

So many great shots of the volcano. In 1983 I flew with a buddy over the volcano as it was erupting 700 feet into the air. That was an amazing trip as I could feel the heat through the floorboard and the plane was like a small top knocked around by the air currents generated by the eruption. I got some great shots of it, but they've been lost over time. Yours are just great!!

What an ominous looking red glow that is!
Heidi Fickinger replied:
It appearance of the glow is much more ominous than it actually is; a fine mist drifting clouds over the volcano reflects the red glow of lava, making it seem as if fire is in the sky.
