Description
An ever-so-beautiful and tranquil morning on the Island of Moloka'i left me breathless with this view to Maui. The still waters behind a loko iʻa wall reflect early morning clouds flung acresoo the sky. The ancient Hawaiians build fish pond walls on all the major islands to raise fish for the people. These ponds are known a loko iʻa. Many have detoriated over centuries, but on Moloka'i a concerted effort has been in place for years to repair and revive these ponds. This is especially important due to falling wild fish populations throughout the Islands in the ocean surrounding all islands. The loko iʻa (along with sustainable farming) fed a population of Hawaiians prior to white people finding the Islands that was equal to the current population of Hawai'i today.
