Description
On a beautiful clear day this is the view over the Hanalei Wildlife Refuge toward Hihimanu, Namolokama, and Mamalahoa mountains. Depending on the time of year, many different native Hawaiian waterfowl can be found on the reflective waters of the kalo ponds. In this image several ʻalae ʻula (Hawaiian moorhean, Gallinula chloropus sandvicensis), can be seen floating on the water. The ponds are fed by the Hanalei river and support the wetland kalo in the distance has been cultivated over 1000 years. During the 1800s rice was cultivated in the area, but shifted back to Hawaiian kalo after World War II.
