Description
In Hawai'i, the changes between seasons are blurred. During the fall months, we do have cooler nights and of course shorter days, but very few trees lose their leaves in the same process as trees in northern climes. The changes are subtle, but still beautiful. The introduced Strawbery Guava (Psidium cattleianum), we we call Waiwi here in Hawai'i, loses some, but not all of its leaves as summer ends and fruit forms. The trees were brought to Hawai'i sometime in the early 1800s. It is very fast growing in the wetter parts of all the Islands. It is a hard wood and grows in very thick thickets, with new trees growing within inches of each other. Sadly, it is the single most invasive tree in all of Hawai'i. In the past 25 years alone, it has overwhelmed huge amounts of native forests; controlling its spread has been very nearly imposible, especially since when it sets fruit, each tree can be covered with small, golfball sized fruits that are loved by birds and feral pigs, which spread the seeds everywhere they go. Fruits can be picked and made into jams or jellies. They can be eaten from the tree as well. They have a similar tartness and flavor of crabapples.
