Description
This beautiful double rainbow arches over lovely Kāneʻohe Bay on the east side of Oahu Island during a brief rainstorm. Kāneʻohe Bay is the largest sheltered ocean bay in Hawai'i. The area of the bay is part of the Ko'olau volcano caldera, a very long extinct volcano was part of those that made Oah'u millions of years ago. A portion of the western rim of the caldera cataclysmically collapsed and fell into the sea, creating the bay. Geological evidence indicates this is one of the largest ever landslides on earth. This landslide created a massive tsunami which ravaged the islands and possibly the Western coast of ancient North America. Today Kane'ohe Bay is the exact opposite of that turmoil, being one the most serene areas on Oah'u Island.
The bay is a shinning example of environmental clean-up. At one time the bay was highly contaminated with several species of marine algae that exploded in the bay from run-off waters containing large amounts of fertilizers used by farms in the area. The algae grew for decades and had begun to suffocate the coral reefs of the bay. In 2011 a program began to raise and release a tiny native sea urchin into the bay that naturally feeds on marine algae. I met one of the marine biologists that worked on this project on a flight to the U.S. Mainland years back and he told me about the efforts of the group he was a part of and the success they were having. Today the reef has rebounded, resulting in cleaner was and an abundance of reef fish and other marine animals returning to the bay.
