Description
Near the rim of the Halemaumau crater on the Big Island in Hawai'i (within Volcano National Park), there is an area where steam rises from cracks in the ground. The steam is constant and stems from rain and ground water that seeps down to rocks that are heated by the lava far below. It is a surreal, mesmerizing landscape, especially on this day with gusts of the trade winds blowing up to 45 miles an hour as the setting sun streamed through the mist and waving ohia trees.
