Description
The noni (morinda citrifolia) is a fruit-bearing tree in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. The noni, also known as Indian Mulberry, is a small evergreen shrub or tree, usually less than 10 feet high, occasionally rising to 20 feet. Although originally of Asian and Australasian origins, this plant has been transported throughout Polynesia by the seafaring peoples who colonized the Pacific, including the ancient Hawaiians. Noni has been a staple in the medicinal plants used throughout Polynesia for centuries. It was one of the Canoe Plants brought to Hawai'i.
Ripe fruit is very foul-smelling, akin to very ripe blue cheese. The fruit can be smashed upon the skin to be used an an insect repellent, but its main uses have been for the treatment of maladies such as diabetes, heart troubles and high blood pressure, with different portions prescribed for different illnesses. In these days of ozone depletion, noni is useful in the treatment of skin cancers. In the current consumer market, it has been introduced as a supplement in various formats, such as capsules, skin products, and juices.
Other uses for this ancient Polynesian plant include boiling the bark to yield a red dye, while a yellow dye can be prepared from the root. Both colors were use to dye the tapa cloth of the chiefs of ancient Hawai`i. Noni is a kinolau (body form) of the Hawaiian god Ku.

Thank you kindly Ed. Although not a show-shopper image, it is one of my favorites for the reasons you stated. Much aloha to you.
