Description
This is the breathtaking Dragon Fruit Flower. The Dragon Fruit is a cactus which flowers only at night, producing blooms of exquisite explosions of beauty. These incredible flowers bloom when it is full dark and are normally fading by morning light.
The plant is native to Mexico and Central America, where it is known as pitahaya. The edible fruits are brilliant pink to red or yellow in color with protruding green leaflets. They are cultivated here in Hawai'i, as well as Central America and Asia, in tropical environments. In China they are known as Huǒlóng Guǒ, which translates as 'fire dragon fruit'. The fruit is somewhat tart and can sometimes have a taste similar to watermelon.
Here in Hawai'i, many of us grow these magnificent plants in our backyards and eagerly await the spectacular blooms.
