I always loved these little beauties. So lovely against this background. Featured in Hawaiiana. Aloha nui! Back in the years when so many plant and bird species were introduced to the islands, those who did it had no idea what it meant to bring new species in to an established and fragile eco-system. But, it's hard to imagine Hawaii without these pretty birds, or the cardinals and so many others that were brought in. When I lived in Kihei there were even flocks of wild parakeets that had gotten established from tame ones that had been released, and they did tremendous damage to crops and gardens. I don't know if they were successful in eradicating them or not. OK -- I'll stop rambling now! LOL

Heidi Fickinger replied:

You never ramble Jane dear! I agree, the Mejiro is such a beautiful creature and would be missed from the Islands. Much aloha

Artist's Description

This tiny bird is the Japanese Mejiro (Zosterops japonicus), also called the Japanese White Eye. This bird was brought to Hawai'i between 1929 and 1937. The bird was brought here to control insects for the benefit of agriculture. The species is now the most common bird in Hawai'i. It eats both insects and fruit and nectar. Sadly is has overtaken native bird species habitats and competes with them for food. It is also a carrier of avian malaria which has devastated the native bird species.

About Heidi Fickinger

Heidi Fickinger

As a fine-art photographer of many years (initially in black and white large format film), my purpose is to capture and share the incredible beauty in our world. I have a passion for travel and photographing the many places I have been fortunate to explore. I am enthralled by both the grand scene of a live volcano or brilliant sunrise and the amazing detail and design of each tiny part of a flower. There is beauty and design in everything around us and the goal of my work is to share that and encourage everyone to look closely and take the time to see what is before us all.
