Description
The Madagascar Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda), also known as the Gold Dust Day gecko was brought to Hawai'i by illegal smuggling. The entire Hawaiian population stems from only eight lizards a University of Hawaiʻi student released near the Mānoa campus in 1974. Shortsighted lizard enthusiasts intentionally dispersed the geckos, which then colonized new areas on their own. Maui residents began seeing gold dust day geckos creeping around Kīhei in the mid 90s. The lizards now populate landscaped yards throughout South and Central Maui and are becoming common Upcountry. These geckos are brilliantly colored in neon green with spots of red on the back and some turquoise patches around the eyes on on the feet.
While beautiful, these geckos are a pest if allowed to get inside houses, as they breed prolifically. They are considered invasive although the damage to native insect species has not been well-studied.
