Artist's Description
At the end of April 2018, the level of the lava lake in the Halemaumau Crater of the active Kilauea Volcano rose dramatically to spill over into the main crater in Volcano National Park on the Big Island in Hawai'i. For days, the lake had waves of lava traveling across its surface in sinuous moving lines of brilliant red and orange. As the waves reverberated against the crater walls, fountains of lava spattered skyward. The glow of the incandescent lava lit the adjacent crater walls in a red glow. This amazing event ended after a large 6.9 earthquake that rocked the eastern side of our Island and the level of the lake plummeted in the course of more than a week until today, it is completely out of sight and is more than 800 feet below the level it reached in late April.

About Heidi Fickinger
As a fine-art photographer of many years (initially in black and white large format film), my purpose is to capture and share the incredible beauty in our world. I have a passion for travel and photographing the many places I have been fortunate to explore. I am enthralled by both the grand scene of a live volcano or brilliant sunrise and the amazing detail and design of each tiny part of a flower. There is beauty and design in everything around us and the goal of my work is to share that and encourage everyone to look closely and take the time to see what is before us all.

A spectacular series on Kilauea volcano. In 1982 or 3 I flew with a friend over the volcano when it was erupting up to 700 feet. I could feel the heat through the floorboard of the plane. We were terrifically jolted around by the heat and wind. But it was a spectacular photo op and I loved it. Unfortunately, I lost all of my images through a computer hard drive meltdown and improper backup. Oh well, the memory is vivid and brought to life again through your wonderful work. Thanks.

This is amazing. While I absolutely love this line of eruption photos, they also instill a sense of fear and respect in their awe and power. Talking about living on the edge!

Greetings to sweet Heidi, Your gorgeous lava series remind me of an unforgettable documentary I saw in IMAX theater years ago. It was titled THE RING OF FIRE. It was about the volcanos around the pacific rim and beyond. I see so much drama in your work, my lady. Keep it up.
Heidi Fickinger replied:
I think you are both a poet and an artist Bijan. Sincere thanks for your wonderful words.
