This is the Japanese White Eye (zosterops japonicas). It is of the passerine order and is also known as Mejiro. It was introduced into Hawai'i in 1929 and has spread to all Islands and has one of the largest populations of passerines in Hawai'i. A beauty tiny bird that feeds on insects, fruit and nectars from flowers. While greatly loved in Hawai'i, sadly it was one of the birds that brought several avian diseases to the islands that severely affected native birds, contributing to extinction of species.
As a fine-art photographer of many years (initially in black and white large format film), my purpose is to capture and share the incredible beauty in our world. I have a passion for travel and photographing the many places I have been fortunate to explore. I am enthralled by both the grand scene of a live volcano or brilliant sunrise and the amazing detail and design of each tiny part of a flower. There is beauty and design in everything around us and the goal of my work is to share that and encourage everyone to look closely and take the time to see what is before us all.

Joni Eskridge
Beautiful bird, Heidi! Such a delicate balance in nature; then again, nature has a way of adapting to what's thrown at it. I think we need to be mindful of the delicate balance and grateful for the great resilience.
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Thank you Joni. The environment here is very vulnerable, Joni. Because of the moderate tropical environment and rich, volcanic soil, things grow rapidly. However, prior to the over 6000 species of invasive plants and animals brought here, the plants and birds were unique to the world. That they are being overwhelmed and becoming extinct because of carelessness is a tragedy.

Thank you very much for the feature, William. It is sad - wish I could go back a hundred years and see what the Islands were like before all the invasive species were introduced.
