This is an image of the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, which is a one of the active portions of the Kīlauea Volcano on the Big Island in Hawai'i. This crater is in the Hawai;i Volcano National Park and since the crater re-opened in 2008, has given us here glorious displays of its power and beauty. The crater contains a lava lake that is in continuous movement, with ripples that cross its surface as well as fountains of lava along the rim of the lake against the cliffs. The result is a fantastic, otherworldly glow that rises from the crater at night, illuminating a nearly constant plume of steam and volcanic gas emissions sailing into the night sky. From the Jaggar Museum and observatory overlook, you can often time hear hisses, rumbles and booms as the lava roils in its crater.
In Hawaiian mythology, the fire goddess Pele, lives in all volcanoes of the Islands and this area is sacred to Hawaiians.
