Description
One of the most interesting trees you will find throughout Polynesia is Pandanus tectorius, known as Pu Hala in Hawai'i. Trees seem to have multiple legs as it they may walk away in the middle of a magical moonlit night. The long leaves ot the tree grow in spirals at the end of invidual branches, which earned it the nickname by the first white explorers 'screw pine'. This beautiful grove of hala is on the slopes of the wonderful Limahuli National Botanical Gardens on Kauai. The gardens were developed to continue ancient traditions of plant cultivation and help preserve endangered species of birds and plants that now need humans to ensure their survival.
