The rare and threatened Maui Silversword grows only on summit and inside the crater of Haleakalā on the Island of Maui. The Silversword blooms once with a nearly 6 foot spiral spike that comes from the center of the plant and unfolds in a whorl to throw out hundreds of dollar-sized, deep burgundy flowers with tiny yellow florets. The major surprise to me was the intense, sweet fragrance that the flowers emited in the early evening air.
