Description
Before dawn, the glory of the fiery pyrocumulus clouds formed when the Puna lava flow reaches the ocean on the Big Island in Hawai'i is jaw-dropping beauty. While in this image the clouds appear to be in violent conflagration, they are mostly steam from the more than 1000 degree lava hitting and evaporating the sea. The clouds twist and whirl up-ward continuously, reflecting the red and orange glow of the lava river that has reached the sea. It is a sight I had never expected to witness and am very thankful to live on this Island and be able to see it.
