The lyrical curve of this Hawaiian Hāpuʻu (tree fern) delighted me and seemed to be a visual chorus. In Hawai'i you can find several types of tree ferns, most of which have been imported from other Pacific islands, including New Zealand. This fern tree, however is the native hāpuʻu, (Cibotium menziesii). These ferns can be found at the windward (east) side of most Hawaiian islands at elevations between 1000 to 6000 ft (300 to 1800 meters). There used to be hāpuʻu all over the Hawaiian islands, but due to population pressure and their transplantation for landscaping purposes they are becoming more difficult to find.
The Hāpuʻu has an important place in the Hawaiian culture. The core of the fern is edible. It is starchy and can be cooked, but was normally only eaten in times of famine. As a fine-art photographer of many years (initially in black and white large format film), my purpose is to capture and share the incredible beauty in our world. I have a passion for travel and photographing the many places I have been fortunate to explore. I am enthralled by both the grand scene of a live volcano or brilliant sunrise and the amazing detail and design of each tiny part of a flower. There is beauty and design in everything around us and the goal of my work is to share that and encourage everyone to look closely and take the time to see what is before us all.
