Description
In August of 2021, the worst wildfire in Hawaii history burned on Hawai'i Island. The fire burned nearly 50,000 acres over the course of nearly a week. The areas of the burn included private homes and ranches, portions of protected lands that contained endangered species and forest services lands. The cause of the fire was never discovered, but was likely from a cigarette thrown from a vehicle into an aread plagued by serious drought brought on by global warming. This photo was taken 3 months after the fire was finally contained and put out. Although the land had a new convering of grasses, a line of trees can be seen that appears to be dressed in fall foliage, but are instead trees with scorched leaves. The land I walked was ankle deep in super fine ash. Although great destruction happened here, the area had incredibly deep beauty, made more poignant by the knowledge of what had occured.

Great photography! Sad story. Hope that the area can have new life.
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Many thanks and much aloha Barbara. Luckily the area is likely to recover due to the rich soil. However, some of the native plant and bird species suffered a great blow - they are already under great onslaught from loss of their habitat and invasive species.
