Description
Sugar cane was once the biggest industry on Hawai'i Island. Vast acres of rich, fertile land was cleared and planted with sugar cane. As a child I had relatives who went to Hawai'i to work the sugar cane fields, which was brutal work, but was a doorway to many people who migrated to the Islands. Gradually the sugar cane industry died out due to high labor costs as workers demanded wages that allowed them to earn a decent living. The last plantation closed on Maui Island in 2016. Farming sugar on Hawai'i Island ended many years before. Many of the sugar cane lands were actually given to long-time workers who had also resided in company-built housing that because small towns. Old plantation lands are still dotted with old farming equipment, such as this tractor that slowly returns to the earth.
