This otherworldly plant is one of the rarest flowering plants in the world, the Maui Silversword (argyroxiphium sandwicense, subsp. macrocephalum). The Maui Silversword faced extinction due to its very limited habitat and predation by introduced livestock in and around the Haleakala Crater within the Haleakela National Park on Maui Island.
The name comes from the irridescent silver leaves that form the plant. Once in each plant's lifetime a swirling flower stalk begins to grow from the center of the plant and the stalk bursts into deep burgandy-colored, highly fragrant flowers with tiny yellow flowerets. It is quite magnificent to see and seems to have come from somewhere out in the universe. I was fortunate to see these plants on a recent hike and camp in the Haleakala Crater in the Haleakala National Park.
